Follow the expedition!
The largest Dutch Polar expedition ever leaves for the east coast of Spitsbergen on 19 August. Over fifty researchers are heading for the island of Edgeøya. The Dutch media have already reported extensively on this extraordinary expedition, which is the brainchild of Maarten Loonen of the University of Groningen Arctic Centre.
Various participants in the expedition – scientists, as well as journalists and, for example, weatherman and polar meteorologist Peter Kuipers Munneke – will be blogging about their journey to and experiences on Edgeøya. Below are a number of links to blogs and other sources of information about the expedition, including the expedition’s Facebook page.
NOS reports
The NOS will be paying extensive attention to the expedition. Peter Kuipers Munneke, NOS weatherman and a climate researcher from Utrecht University, will be going. He is going to set up a weather station on Edgeøya to monitor the melting of the glaciers. Starting on Wednesday, Kuipers Munneke will be keeping a weblog on the NOS website and speaking to the presenter of the Radio 1 evening news programme every weekday. Reporter Martijn Bink will be providing an item for the 8 o’clock news on 28, 29 and 30 August. There are also several articles on the NOS website already.
