On view at UMCG: Phantom Models 7

Until 30 September 2023 at Poortweg, UMCG, Main Building
phantom models 7

The work Phantom Models 7 , by Italian artist Christian Fogarolli (1983), is on display in the carrousel at the Poortweg - UMCG Main Building. In this work Fogarolli combines scientific heritage and modern art.

In this work Fogarolli (1983) shows the development of our knowledgde of the human brain. He combines recent MRI scans of his own brain with the phantome thread model by Büchi. This 19th-century model is most likely the first model visualizing how information is processed in our brain.

Thanks to the rapid developments in technology and knowledge, scientists know more and more about the human brain. But does this growing knowledge also mean we are losing out of sight what it means to be human? This is a question Fogarolli is posing in Phantom Models 7.

The exhibition at UMCG came into being in cooperation with the University Museum Groningen.
