Before arrival

Requirements for Exchange Students
Level of studies

To be able to study successfully at the Faculty of Arts, students should at least be in their second year of study and have a minimum of 60 ECTS or the equivalent at the time of applying.

English

The level of English required for all courses is*:

  • CEFR B2/C1 or
  • TOEFL iBT 92 (minimum of 21 for each section) or
  • IELTS 6.5 (minimum 6.0 for each section)
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced

*Please note:
Students who want to enroll in MA courses and all courses taught by the American Studies, Linguistics and Journalism programme must have a level of proficiency of:

  • TOEFL 100 (minimum of 25 for writing skills),
  • IELTS 7 (minimum of 6,5 for each section),
  • CEFR C1,
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced.

For the MA course of the English Language and Culture programme the requirements are:

  • TOEFL 110 (minimum of 25 for writing skills),
  • IELTS 8 (minimum of 7,5 for each section),
  • CEFR C1,
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced.
Other languages

If students wish to enroll in courses not taught in English but in another language that is not their mother tongue, they need to send a certificate or statement from the language instructor at the home university indicating their (CEFR) level of proficiency in that language. If students wish to enroll in courses taught in Dutch, their level needs to be at least CEFR B2/C1.

Please be mindful that:

  • your student should be enrolled as a full-time student at your home university to apply for an exchange programme with us,
  • your student needs a Bachelor’s degree in the relevant field of study in order to apply for Master’s courses.
Exchange application procedure
  1. Nomination*
    Nominate your student before the nomination deadline (see below) through Mobility Online (include name, email address, field of study, level during exchange and period of exchange);
  2. Provisional acceptance
    Student receives information from the Office for Student Affairs of the Faculty of Arts on how to apply for accommodation, dates and other practical matters;
  3. Application procedure
    Student applies in Mobility Online;
  4. Letter of Invitation
    Student receives the ‘Letter of Invitation’ and is registered as a student at the University of Groningen;
  5. Course selection assessment
    The enrolment officer contacts the student about admission to courses. The Office for Student Affairs takes care of all course enrolments.

*If an exchange is cancelled after nomination, please inform us of this cancellation as soon as possible, to avoid unnecessary email communication.

Nomination deadlines

For starting in September:

1 May for students from Australia, Canada, EU/EEA countries, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Vatican City, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, South Korea

15 April for students from all other nationalities


For starting in February:

1 October for students from Australia, Canada, EU/EEA countries, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Vatican City, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, South Korea

15 September for students from all other nationalities

Once your student(s) have been accepted for an exchange, there are still a lot of steps necessary to arrange a successful exchange semester. The checklist below will help them to efficiently organize everything in time. They should also check the guide that we sent to them for more detailed information about the various steps.

Checklist for students
  1. If applicable, apply for visa
  2. Arrange accommodation (Note that the housing situation in Groningen can be difficult. We advise you to start your search as soon as you have received your Letter of Invitation and your exchange programme has been officially confirmed)
  3. Activate your UG account (activation instructions will be sent to your private email address, check your Spambox)
  4. Upload your photograph to get your student card
  5. Arrange your trip to Groningen; make sure to be in Groningen in time for all compulsory events
  6. If applicable, arrange your Learning Agreement (it is possible that your home university provides this document and it needs to be signed by us)
  7. Register for an ESN buddy
  8. Take a look at the academic calendar to find out when you have lectures, exam periods and holidays
  9. Read the handbook for international students to learn about studying at the Faculty of Arts, student services and support, and ‘leisure management’ in Groningen.

When in Groningen

A good start is essential for your student's study success and enjoying their time as an exchange student in Groningen. In order to make the most out of their stay in Groningen, it is necessary to get introduced to their new (academic) environment and we therefore organize several introduction events.

Support

Before and during their stay at the Faculty of Arts your students can get support from the Exchange Team. The team has a student counsellor, enrolment officer and exchange coordinator especially for incoming exchange students. There is also an exchange assistant whom they will probably meet when they arrive in Groningen.

When leaving Groningen

Transcript of Records

At the end of the exchange the Transcript of Records of your student(s) will automatically be provided when all the final grades have been registered in our system.

The process takes us up to 4-6 weeks, so you can expect the list of grades halfway through August for your full year and spring semester student(s) and halfway through March for your fall semester student(s). We will send the academic record(s) digitally and directly to your address.
