Faculty of Arts Fellowship for Gilles de Langen
Recently, prof. dr. Gilles de Langen, provincial archaeologist in Friesland was appointed Research Fellow in the field of archaeology of the Frisian coastal area at the Groningen Institute of Archaeology (GIA), part of the Faculty of Arts (UG). The appointment follows a period of ten years in which De Langen was connected to the UG as an honorary professor and as such he supervised several PhD projects.
In his position as provincial archaeologist, De Langen ensured that the results of these PhD projects found their way into the archaeological policy of the province of Fryslân. Conversely, De Langen's dedication as a professor at the GIA ensures continuity when it comes to scientific attention for the archaeology of the Frisian coastal area, which is so important and characteristic for Fryslân.
About the Fellowship
The appointment as Research Fellow enables De Langen to continue the years of intensive cooperation and knowledge exchange between the province of Fryslân and the Faculty of Arts. For instance, De Langen's involvement in the ongoing PhD research projects at GIA will be continued. For the province of Fryslân this means that the results of the ongoing PhD projects will be used for provincial policies in the coming five years (2021-2026).
The Faculty Board is pleased that this fellowship reinforces the ties between the province and the Faculty, also because this cooperation is in line with the strategy of the faculty to create impact through cooperation with social partners.
