Title: Leader cognition and behavior as outcomes rather than predictors: The influence of followers and team members

Abstract:

Research on leadership and teams has primarily focused on how a leader’s actions shape the motivation, coordination, and behavior of teams. This process of influence, however, runs both ways. By adopting a followership perspective, I will present one set of empirical results showing how subordinates can alter the cognition and behavior of their leaders. Specifically, I will describe how subordinates’ citizenship behavior can strengthen leaders’ moral identity, which in turn prompts leaders to engage in either morally licensed or morally consistent behavior, depending on the leader’s personal orientation.
