Title:

Longitudinal team research: Do the methods we use answer the questions we (intend to) ask?

Abstract:

There is an increasing consensus about the importance to study teams as dynamic entities. At the conceptual level, team composition, structures, processes, emergent states, and performance are all argued to vary over time. At the analytical level, random coefficient modeling and latent growth modeling are becoming the norm to test the dynamic relationships among these team aspects. Despite these promising developments, what seems missing is a deep reflection upon how these methods are aligned with questions asked and what alternative methods are available to explore potential new theoretical fronts.

In this presentation, I reflect upon a few fundamental methodological issues relevant for longitudinal team research. I take a broader definition of “methodology” and refer to it as the linkage between research questions and analytical methods. These issues include (1) Is the question temporal or dynamic? (2) Should the direction of change be incorporated in the definition of the concept or dealt with empirically? If the latter, should it be described or inferred? (3) What does a dynamic relationship between two variables mean? (4) How to build and test dynamic mediation models and dynamic moderation models? (5) How about alternative methods to test across-level dynamical relationships? (6) Is the theory about intra-team dynamics really different from that about inter-team comparisons? This presentation is not meant to provide hands-on statistical training but to clarify a few important methodological issues to help advance team research along the temporal-dynamic avenue.
