Renovation of Oude Boteringestraat 18 into Faculty of Law starts in January
From the second week of January 2022, contractor Visser & Smit Bouw from Groningen will start the renovation of the new accommodation for the Faculty of Law at Oude Boteringestraat 18. The biggest changes to this former library building are the construction of a fourth floor, a new patio to provide more daylight in the previously dark library spaces, the addition of a bicycle entrance in the Poststraat and its integration with an existing side entrance at the Broerplein. The contractor was selected after a European tendering procedure. The faculty is expected to be able to move in in 2023.

Visser & Smit Bouw will be setting up the building site from 10 January onwards, mainly in the Poststraat at the back (between the building and the University Library) and partly on the Broerstraat side. In Groningen, contractor Visser & Smit is also known for the construction of the Proton Therapy Centre (UMCG) and the renovation of the City Hall on the Grote Markt. They therefore have extensive experience with complex building processes with little space in Groningen's inner city. They will carry out the work in cooperation with HOMIJ Technische Installaties.
Architect Grassi
In 2014, the RUG bought the building on Oude Boteringestraat 18 to provide the Faculty of Law, one of the largest growing faculties of the UG with some 4,900 students and 400 staff, with its own accommodation in the city centre. The eye-catching building from 1992 by the renowned Italian architect Giorgio Grassi is of great significance for Groningen as a city of architecture. During the new design phase, the university worked together with architects Cruz y Ortiz / Inbo, the city architect (Stadsbouwmeester) of Groningen and architect Grassi himself.
The building will undergo a major upgrade and become an open and transparent study and working environment of approximately 10,000 m2 for the students and staff of the Faculty of Law.
