Upgrade Zernikelaan makes a lot of progress in summer
The Zernikeplein on Zernike Campus got a new look this summer. Before the vacations the square was completely turned upside down because of the relocation of cables and pipes, now it has been redesigned with a sleek bus lane and bicycle and footpaths.
Besides the Zernikeplein, work has also been done on the north side of the Zernikelaan, near EnTranCe. This spot has been provided with new asphalt, a park-like layout and new bicycle and footpaths. All work is part of the Upgrade Zernikelaan project. The upgrade involves substantial investments in the quality of the public space and traffic safety of Campus Groningen. "We are extremely pleased with this rapid progress. You can already see the contours of the beautiful heart of Zernike Campus," says Annet de Vree, development manager of Campus Groningen.
Current work
Contractor Royal Oosterhof Holman is currently working between De Mudden and the Pondematen on new cycle paths and footpaths and preparing for the relocation of the carriageway. The Duisenberg Pond, part of the new green heart of the campus, will have a beautiful decking. Next winter the park will be constructed next to the Duisenberg pond and more than 200 trees will be planted along the Zernikelaan.

Ready mid 2021
In the summer of 2021, between the Kadijk and the Pondematen, the last part of the bus lane will be renewed and the bus junction will be equipped for electric driving. A grandstand and pannacourt will be built at the Willem-Alexander Sports Center. Then the upgrade of the Zernikelaan is complete, resulting in a beautiful, lively and safe Zernikelaan.
Zernike Campus
The Zernike Campus is a dynamic environment where educational institutions and the business community meet. The upgrade of the Zernikelaan is a collaboration between the Municipality of Groningen, the University of Groningen and Hanze University of Applied Sciences. The work will be carried out by contractor Koninklijke Oosterhof Holman.
