Good news! Sports Centre connected to WarmteStad

10 January 2025

Since 19 December 2024, the Sports Centre is the first building on the Zernike Campus to run on sustainable heat from WarmteStad! WarmteStad is the heat company of Groningen municipality and Groningen Water Company, contributing to a natural gas-free Groningen. Since the infrastructure was already here, it was a relatively small operation. In the few years that the current Sports Centre is still there, we already save 85,000 m3 of gas per year (181,000 kg CO2). That is comparable to the annual gas consumption of 71 households.

The photo shows a technician putting the finishing touches to the heat transfer station located in the technical area of the Sports Centre. This will supply heat to the Sports Centre. Both the heating of the building and the water for the showers are provided with sustainable heat. The Sports Centre is now virtually off gas.

Despite the fact that many UG buildings were closed during the Christmas break, the Sports Centre was open for a two-week chess tournament. The connection to WarmteStad went smoothly and the participants were nice and warm during the tournament!
