Fellows round 2017
In the seventh round of the Rosalind Franklin Fellowships (2017) the Faculty of Science and Engineering has appointed four fellows:
- Prof. Dimka Karastoyanova at the Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence
- Dr. Lingyu Wang at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute
- Dr. Jacolien van Rij at the Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence
- Dr. Alden Waters at the Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence
Prof. Dimka Karastoyanova
Prof. Dimka Karastoyanova joined the Computer Science Department of the University of Groningen in January 2018 as a full professor of Information Systems and a head of the Information Systems Group. Before that she had a joint appointment as an associate professor of Data Science at The KLU (Kühne Logistics University) in Hamburg and as a Senior Researcher at HPI (Hasso Plattner Institut), University of Potsdam, Germany. Dimka was a junior professor at the Excellence Cluster SimTech and at the Institute of Architecture of Application Systems (IAAS) at the Computer Science Department of the University of Stuttgart. She received her doctoral degree in Computer Science in 2006 from the Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany, where she was a member of the Databases and Distributed Systems Group and of the Graduate School 'Enabling Technologies for the E-Commerce'. She holds an MSc degree in Computational Engineering from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and an MSc and BSc in Industrial Engineering for the Technical University of Sofia, Bulgaria.
Dimka’s current research is in the field of data-driven, service-based, runtime process automation and performance improvement, trusted and flexible cross-organizational collaboration and abstractions, techniques and middleware systems for flexible choreographies finding application in fields like logistics, supply chain management, eScience, Data Science, healthcare and others.

Dr. Lingyu Wang
Dr. Lingyu Wang obtained her PhD in 2009 from the Imperial College London in the UK, supervised by Professor Michael Rowan-Robinson. Her PhD thesis was on large-scale structure from infrared surveys. Subsequently, she held two postdoctoral fellow positions at the University of Sussex and the University of Durham in the UK. Since 2015, she has been appointed as a Rosalind Franklin Fellow (assistant professor) at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute and scientist at SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research. Since 2019, she holds a tenured senior scientist position at SRON. Her research has focused on galaxy formation and evolution and its connection with the underlying cosmological model. She has used large and complex multi-wavelength datasets, statistical modelling, machine learning and comparison with state-of-the-art cosmological simulations as her main tools with which to understand how galaxies form stars, assemble mass, change morphology and co-evolve with their central supermassive black holes.
