Kick-off activities

During the FSE -Pre-Master’s Introduction on Thursday, 29 August from 10.00-11.30 hours in room 5161.0253, we will welcome our pre-Master’s students and introduce them to the ins and outs of our faculty.

Introduction to pre-Master’s programme

Following on the FSE Pre-Master’s Introduction, all students starting their premaster for Artificial Intelligence or Computational Cognitive Science are invited for the subsequent Introductory lecture about the programme at 11.45- 12.30 hrs in BB 5161.0293.

Your courses will start on Monday September 2nd; you can find the schedules for individual courses on rooster.rug.nl once they are available.

Information Market

The Information Market will be held on Tuesday, 3 September 2024 in the main hallway of the Energy Academy. It offers an opportunity for you to get all the information that you may need to start your journey here at the FSE outside the standard information regarding your programme.

The organisations listed below will all be present at the market. There will also be poffertjes and a barista available outside the venue throughout the day!

@Ease

Hi! We are @ease: a place where young volunteers are available for other young people who would like to comfortably clear their thoughts and get things off their chest. The volunteers are young people just like you, there for you whenever you need to talk. Free of charge, anonymous, as many times as you’d like. You will be talking to people of similar age, many of which are also students. @ease is there for everybody in the age range of 12 to 25.

Come talk to us at any time during your stay at Groningen. In Groningen we are available for in person conversations every Tuesday afternoon, you can also chat with us online: every Monday to Thursday.

Career Services FSE

We welcome you to the Faculty of Science and Engineering. You are about to start your studies. You might not realize, but in the coming years you will prepare yourself for your future career. Alongside your study programme, where you will gain the necessary academic knowledge and skills, it is important to develop your soft skills that will help you in your future career. Career Services FSE is here to help you with exactly that.

What do we offer at Career Services?

  • Vacancy database
    Looking for a job as a student assistant or teaching assistant?
    Lecturers and other employees of the FSE work with student assistants and teaching assistants to get all the work at the faculty done. A lot of students work as a student assistant or teaching assistant, it is a paid, usually part time, job alongside your studies. Looking for a job as a student assistant or teaching assistant? Please visit the Career Tab on the student portal for job vacancies for student assistants or for teaching assistants.
  • Checks of CV, motivation letter and LinkedIn profile & photo shoots.
    Found a job you want to apply for? Please visit the Career Services Desk FSE on tour for free advice and tips on your CV, cover letter and LinkedIn profile. Also valuable when you apply for a student assistant or teaching assistant job. You can also have your profile picture taken at the desk on tour.
  • Workshops
    Career Services organizes (online) workshops so you can develop skills necessary for your future job(s). During career workshops you mostly develop your soft skills, such as networking and how to make a job interview a success. While your study programme does not teach you these skills, developing them is necessary to get and keep a job after you graduate.
  • FSE Career Day
    The FSE Career Day is a yearly event where all FSE students are welcome to participate in all kinds of activities to help you prepare for your future career. The target audience of the FSE Career Day is master students, however all FSE students are more then welcome to join. The next FSE Career Day takes place on May 15, 2024 in the FSE buildings at Zernike. More information will follow closer to the event.
  • Career activities at the study associations
    Where the activities of Career Services focus on getting to know yourself and developing yourself and your skills, the study associations focus on helping you to connect to the labour market. We highly recommend you to join your study association so you can also take part in their career activities.
Confidential Advisor

If you experience undesirable behaviour ((sexual) intimidation, discrimination, bullying, aggression, stalking, unequal or unfair treatment) while studying at the University of Groningen you can always contact the confidential advisor, Marjolein Renker and/or Petra de Jong.

The confidential advisor offers individual support and assistance to students and staff.

The confidential advisor will help you look for a way to resolve the undesirable situation and provide guidance in this process. Where necessary the confidential advisor will refer you to other specialists inside or outside the university.

The confidential advisor is independent and will only take follow-up steps with the explicit permission of the student concerned.

Undesirable behaviour can cause stress and mental and physical health problems. it is important not to keep it to yourself but to talk to someone!

Introduction Camp

A great way to get to know your fellow students as soon as possible, is the Introduction Camp, organized by the study association of your degree programme.

The Board of Cover welcomes you

Dear first-year student,

Congratulations on choosing either Artificial Intelligence or Computing Science as your degree programme, you have made a great choice! We are Study Association Cover, the association for all students that study AI or CS here at the UG. We offer fun activities, a room to hang out and support for you to pass all your upcoming courses.

At the moment we are planning the introduction period together with your degree programme. This will mark the beginning of your student life here in Groningen. In this week we will organise activities to help you with a great and exciting start of your academic career. At the end of the week (i.e. the weekend) there will be an Introduction Camp. These activities will allow you to get to know your fellow students, study program, study association and student life in Groningen in general. More information on the introductory activities can be found elsewhere in the welcome pages.

Cover is the place to hang out, study and party with other students from AI and CS as well as come in contact with interesting companies. For more information visit our lovely website (www.svcover.nl).

What is Cover?

Cover is the study association for students of Artificial Intelligence, Computing Science and Computational cognitive Science. Cover organises three types of activities for its members: educational, social and career events.

In terms of educational events, Cover offers study support lectures and study sessions in cafés and even has a tutoring system to help you get a better grasp of the course’s content. We also have a database of previous exams and study material to help you with exam preparation.

Besides this, we organise engaging events that go beyond the scope of AI/CS courses, like the yearly symposium or programming events such as The Groningen Algorithmic Programming Contest (GAPC) and hackathons.

Cover Symposium

When it comes to social activities, Cover organises a variety of fun events, from an annual gala, bi-monthly socials and weekly free drinks in the Cover room (Thursdays at 16:00), gaming events, sport events, and so much more. Cover not only organises several day trips (such as going to Walibi), we also set up a yearl excursion, a members weekend, LAN parties and more. For example, last year’s excursion was a week long trip to Thessaloniki, Greece.

As for career events, Cover maintains close contact with many companies all over the Netherlands and abroad. Cover provides plenty of networking opportunities via activities in collaboration with our sponsor companies, which consist of (lunch) lectures, workshops, hackathons and even non-career related sponsored activities (e.g. karting, ice-skating). Cover also organises a yearly Career Day in which you get to meet several companies and find out about projects that might interest you.

Cover Room

The Cover room is located on the ground floor of the Bernoulliborg (the big blue building) in room 5161.0041a (right next to the study landscape). You can head there to socialise with your fellow members and sometimes even with staff members. Alongside that, it is a space to study, get snacks (they’re cheap) and play board games or video games on the consoles (nintendo switch...). Sometimes events are hosted in the room, such as the weekly TADs (Thursday Afternoon Drinks) at 16:00, during which you can enjoy some free beverages, or the coffee mornings with staff, where you can socialise with (your) professors and lecturers over a nice cup of coffee.

Committees

Cover has over 1000 student members, about 100 of whom are active in committees. A committee consists of a number of members who work as a team to perform certain duties for the association and help make it a lively and welcoming place. For example, ActiviTee organises the majority of parties and the monthly socials, StudCee organises study support lectures to help you pass exams each period and ComExA helps organise career-related events. Joining a committee will enable you to contribute to the study association in a fun way, while gaining new skills (organisational, communication, etc.) and making new friends along the way!

One of the goals of the association is to help improve the study programmes in collaboration with the staff members. Furthermore, we hope to welcome a whole new batch of excited first-year students,who will experience the advantages of what we have to offer.
