Mentor
Every first-year student is assigned to a mentor group, led by a senior student of the programme. Your mentor is there to help you adjust to life at university and your programme in particular, with (group) mentor meetings, individual talks and social activities. Your mentor is the first point of contact while you get settled. During the first half year of the programme there will be several meetings where you can ask them anything.
What are these mentor meetings about?
Together with 10-14 first year students of your programme, you will form a mentor group. These groups are linked to a student mentor, who is a senior student of the programme of Biology. It hasn’t been that long since the mentors were first year students themselves, so they know from their own experience what it was like to be new in the programme, new at university, new in Groningen, new in the Netherlands. Your mentor will be there to help and guide you during these first exciting months.
In the last week of August, you will receive an email with information on who your mentor is and how to contact them.
Your group will meet (at least) 6 to 7 times during the first semester. The meetings will take place in person on campus. Several topics will be dealt with, like getting to know your fellow students, where to find all the information you need and how to get around on campus. Later in the semester, you will get tips & tricks to improve your study skills, make choices in your programme, plan & prepare for exams etc. You can ALWAYS contact your mentor – in these meetings but also at other moments – if you have worries or questions about your study or other issues.
So don’t worry about what might happen when you start your programme in September. There is someone there to help you with all your questions if necessary.
If you have questions about the mentor programme, or any questions or worries about starting the Bachelor programme in September, feel free to send an email to our head mentors Emma Schalm and Andrei Seica via headmentorbio@rug.nl.
