Honours College FSE

Are you a student interested in Honours College FSE?

Are you an educator interested in Honours College FSE? Keep on reading.

The Honours College programmes at the Faculty of Science and Engineering are a suitable platform for you, teachers and researchers, to test and/or further develop any innovative educational strategy, (online) tool or format you like.

The FSE Honours programme privileges a highly interactive form of education aimed at small groups of international students. Activities typically involve 5 to 25 students from all disciplines across FSE or even University-wide. The students are actively participating in (the development of) education. FSE researchers also contribute in an essential way to define Research Projects together with 2nd and 3rd year Bachelor students.

If you are interested in contributing as a lecturer in one of our programmes, please contact us (honours.fse@rug.nl). If needed we can provide you with intensive support to develop your educational innovative ideas.

Existing formats are:

Tutorial (2 ECTS)

This is the first part of the Honours programme. A tutorial (2 ECTS) consists of 4 interactive meetings with a small number of students (4-8 students)  and takes approximately 2 hours (preferably evening hours) per week for 4 or 5 weeks in total. The content and format of the tutorial can be designed by yourself.

The idea is that a tutorial is not a lecture series (one-way teaching) but has an interactive atmosphere, with an emphasis on discussion. The tutorials have to be scheduled between April and June (second semester). Within this time interval, you can determine at which dates you would like to provide your tutorial.

Lecture series (1-1,5 hour)

For the second year bachelor Honours students you can provide an interactive lecture of about 1,5 hours (with Q and A), related to your field of expertise. The lectures are scheduled between 19.00 and 20.30h.

Discussion series (3 hours)

For the third-year students, we are looking for lecturers who would like to give a workshop/discussion about a specific topic (scheduled between 19.00 and 21.30h). It would be interesting if the students can work in multidisciplinary groups on this relevant issue and either have for instance a discussion or play a game to get a broader view of the issue and get to know each other('s field of expertise) better.  This can be a platform for you to try out your innovative idea.

Hackathon (2 ECTS)

The idea of a hackathon is that second and third-year students learn how to dissect a problem from different perspectives and solve the problem while considering the stakeholders' needs by using design thinking.  A hackathon will start on Friday evening and the teams will work on their solution during the weekend and pitch their solutions on Sunday afternoon. If you have an idea for a topic, we can help you set up the hackathon and support you and the students during the Hackathon.

Courses (5 ECTS)

If you have an idea for a course useful and interesting to students from different disciplines within FSE we could help you to design such a module. you could give such a course by yourself (f.i. Practical Statistical Hypothesis Testing) or maybe with some of your colleagues, could also be colleagues from different disciplines even (f.i. Life and Information).  Let us know if you have any ideas.

Research projects (5 or 10 ECTS)

Second and third-year Honours students get the chance to develop their own research projects within the field they are interested in. Maybe you can help them by providing a topic. If you have a suggestion for a project yourself, we could also provide it as an option to the students.

Broadening module (5 ECTS)

We are also offering a course for students from outside our faculty. If you would like to contribute to such a multidisciplinary course (1 evening of 2 lectures,18.00- 20.00h) and would like to engage with students from other faculties, please let us know.
