Courses, exams and related matters

A Semesters at the University of Groningen is divided into two blocks:

  • Semester 1 - 1a and 1b: September to February (i.e. Fall)
    Schedule available in July
  • Semester 2 - 2a and 2b: February to mid-July (i.e. Spring)
    Schedule available in December

Exchange students can only enroll in courses open to exchange students. The Faculty of Economics and Business offers courses on master and 2nd and 3rd year bachelor level to exchange students. Additionally, all exchange student can enroll in Dutch Studies courses at the Faculty of Arts. At their own expense, students can also take language courses at the Language Centre. Please note that students do not receive ECTS for language courses, but merely an attendance certificate.

Course enrolment

Students have to register for a course (link only available when you have access to the Student Portal). There is no guarantee that you can take a course afer the registration deadline. Our faculty is very strict with course registration deadlines, so make sure to enroll in time. The course registration deadline is approx. one week before the start of the semester.
There is no course drop period. After the enrollment deadline, students are supposed to stick with the courses they selected.
When admitted to a course, students are automatically registered for the final exam. In the 5th week of the lecture period students can check their exam registrations.

Courses with limited access

Some courses have limited access. Please inform the exchange office if you want to enroll. We will inform you if enrolment is possible.
Semester 1: inform the Exchange Office before August 10.
Semester 2: inform the Exchange Office before January 10.

Course workload

  • Exchange students should enroll in 2-3 course per block, which equals 10-15 ECTS per block. It is possible to enroll in a maximum of 4 courses/20 ECTS per block.
  • 1 ECTS = 28 hours of study. This includes preparing for and attending classes, group work, assignments, exams and so on.
