Mathematics Entrance Exam

Faculty of Economics and Business

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) offers its own Mathematics Entrance Exam and preparatory courses: the Mathematics Spring Course and Mathematics Summer Course.

The entrance exams and courses are meant for (prospective) Pre-Master students and prospective Bachelor students who wish to meet the mathematics entry requirements for their FEB study programme.

Pre-Master students can check the mathematics requirements on the Pre-MSc website .

Exam dates in 2024/2025

  • Wednesday January 8, 2025, 18:30 - 21:30. -Pre-Master students only- (Enrolment is closed)
  • Tuesday May 20, 2025, 09:00-12:00. (Enrolment will be open on this website from January 9 until May 11)
  • Monday August 11, 2025, 12:00-15:00. (Enrolment is open from May 14 until July 20)

Good to know

  • Participation fee for exam only: € 150
  • If you take one of the preparatory courses, you are automatically enrolled for the concluding exam.
  • The FEB Mathematics Entrance Exams take place on campus. They are not offered as online exams.
  • At the exam, you will be offered the choice to make it in English or in Dutch.
  • Exam participants are informed by email about the exam details and location after the enrolment deadline.

Topics covered in the FEB Math entrance exam
  • Solving linear, quadratic, exponential and logarithmic equations and inequalities (using sign diagrams)
  • Simplifying algebraic expressions, square roots, factorization, least common denominators
  • Formulating linear functions, solving systems of two linear equations
  • Determining derivatives of functions (basic rules, exponential functions, rules for sums, products and quotients, chain rule)
  • Investigating functions (stationary points, increasing/decreasing, minima/maxima, drawing graphs, rules for shifting graphs, domain, range)
  • Growth processes (interest, depreciation)


Note: Future students of the Bachelor Econometrics and Operations Research have an extended exam covering more topics.

How to prepare for the FEB Math entrance exam

Take the FEB spring or summer course

If you want to brush up on your mathematical knowledge, prior to taking the entrance exam, you can take the FEB Mathematics Spring Course or the FEB Mathematics Summer Course

Check the textbook

'Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis', sixth (or fifth) edition, by Sydsaeter, Hammond, Strom and Carvajal. See the overview for relevant chapters.

The exercises and facts of FEB's summer course mathematics can be used to prepare for the entrance exam (note that the exercises do not include solutions):

Use of calculator

During the exam, it is not allowed to use a graphical calculator, a symbolic calculator, or a calculator with an alphanumeric keyboard.

A simple scientific calculator is recommended. Only the following calculators are allowed for the entrance exam:
Casio fx-82ES, Casio fx-82MS, Casio fx-82EX, Casio fx-85ES, Casio fx-85MS, Casio fx-85EX.
These calculators are approved for other exams at the Faculty of Economics and Business as well.

The Casio fx-82ES Plus and Casio fx-85ES Plus are not allowed.

Cancellation conditions for the FEB Math entrance exam

Cancellation conditions

If you register for the FEB Mathematics Course / Entrance Exam you agree with the following cancellation conditions:

  • up to 14 days before the start of the activity: cancellation free of charge,
  • within 14 days before the start of the activity: cancellation fee = 50% of the participation fee,
  • on or after the starting date of the activity: cancellation fee = 100% of the participation fee.

To cancel, fill out the request form for refunds and send it to math.feb@rug.nl.

Other options to meet the mathematics requirements

There are several other options to meet the mathematics requirements, depending on your choice of study program and previous education. You will be informed about your options after your study application. The main options are listed below.

Online Mathematics Placement Test (OMPT)

30/45 EC Pre-Master students who wish to take an online test and prospective Bachelor students who are currently living abroad can take the OMPT offered by OMPTest.

Good to know
  • You need a score of at least 60%;
  • The test is available in both Dutch and English;
  • The OMPT is remotely proctored;
  • You may take at most two attempts per calendar year to pass the OMPT (three attemps for Pre-Master students);
  • Check the prices for taking the OMPT.

The OMPT-A is accepted for admission to
  • Several Master programmes after finishing your 30/45/60 EC Pre Master (if applicable)
  • the Bachelor Bedrijfskunde/Business Administration,
  • the Bachelor International Business and
  • the Bachelor Economics and Business Economics.

The OMPT-B is accepted for admission to the Bachelor Econometrics and Operations Research.

James Boswell mathematics test

The James Boswell 'VWO Wiskunde A' certificate is accepted for admission to  

  • the 30/45 EC Pre-Master,
  • the Bachelor Bedrijfskunde/Business Administration,
  • the Bachelor International Business and
  • the Bachelor Economics and Business Economics.  

The exam is offered in Dutch and English. If you are interested, they also offer a mathematics course to prepare for the exam. Check the prices for the James Boswell 'VWO Wiskunde A'.

The James Boswell 'VWO Wiskunde B' certificate is not accepted for admission to the Bachelor Econometrics and Operations Research.

CCVX Mathematics test

The CCVX Mathematics A test is accepted for admission to
  • Several Master programmes after finishing your 30/45/60 EC Pre-
    Master (if applicable),
  • the Bachelor Bedrijfskunde (Business Administration),
  • the Bachelor International Business and
  • the Bachelor Economics and Business Economics.

The CCVX Mathematics B test is accepted for admission to the Bachelor Econometrics and Operations Research. Check CCVX for further information.

Mathematics tests from other institutions

If you have passed another type of mathematics test, then you will need to contact the Admissions Office as soon as possible to enquire with them whether this test and/or certificate will be acceptable instead of the Math exams mentioned above.
