The much-needed winter break will start next week! Are you looking forward to it? Whether you’re spending it with your family back home or with your friends in Groningen, or both, here is a list of everything that cannot be missed during this winter break.
Warm, comfortable clothes
The MOST important items in the starter pack are, of course, warm, comfortable clothes. How else can you relax? Put on your most hideous festive sweater, a pair of old joggers and some slippers, and you’re the cosiest (and most fashionable) person walking around the house. #festivefashionista
Too much good food
When you think of the winter break, you think of good food but tenfold. For some reason, there’s always too much, which leaves you eating left-overs for days. Not complaining though, because: free food. If you want some inspiration for good meals, check out our delicious autumn recipes or cheap and easy recipes for the end of the month!
Board games that cause fights
Of course we cannot forget the fun board games that will turn your family members or friends against each other. Do I hear someone say Monopoly? Yeah… it might be a good idea to keep that one out of sight…
Emotional support, warm drink
After those eventful board games, you’ll definitely need an emotional support, warm drink. Think of a hot chocolate, a cup of tea or, if you need something stronger, some glühwein [mulled wine]. Whenever you feel not-so-festive, take a sip of your drink and know that everything will be alright.
Favourite festive film
Another essential is your favourite festive film. Spending a day in bed and watching film after film is a must to destress from all the hecticness. Also, it’s not an ultimate winter break without Jude Law seducing you through the screen, am I right?
Gezelligheid
Although gezelligheid is not something tangible, it has to be included in this starter pack. Because what is a winter break without gezelligheid? Try to spend as much time with your family as you can or, if you’re staying here in Groningen, ring up your friends and get out there to have some fun! If you’re not spending the winter break with family or friends, take yourself on a cosy date and know that you are amazing and loved :).
Warm oliebollen
Even though they’re greasy, a warm oliebol cannot be missed. They’re little pieces of heaven if you ask me. Don’t eat too much though or you’ll be bedridden for the rest of your break, I’m warning you.
Your ignored uni work
Last but not least, we shouldn’t forget about the ignored uni work. I know, I know, you really don’t want to think about uni during your break but like it or not exams are around the corner so you better do some work! (Reality hits hard, I know.) Read this blog on how you can improve your focus to ace your assignments and exams after the break.
Now you know all the essentials for the ultimate winter break. Let us know if we have forgotten any staple items in the comments below. Enjoy your time off! :)
