5 Amazing New Year's Resolutions For Students

A new decade is finally here! For most of us students, the ’20s will be an incredibly interesting decade. Not only does it include our years as university students, but also the transition into adult life (cue panic). Most of us will end up making incredibly important decisions in the upcoming years. So, I’ve decided to steer away from the typical “new year, new me” resolutions, and instead get some actually helpful resolutions. Hopefully, these will also be habits that help you not only now, but also long ahead into your future.
1. Procrastinate less
Speaking as the #1 procrastinator in the world, I know this sounds very annoying. However, we’ve all been in that stressful period where all the deadlines and exams become overwhelming, and it’s not that nice. This new year, one of your resolutions should be to start on your work earlier and plan ahead. Even starting one day earlier than you usually do will make you feel a noticeable change, and you’ll be less likely to end up having mental breakdowns at the UB.
2. Self-care
Speaking about mental breakdowns… This year, one of your priorities should be to put yourself first. That means physically and mentally. Yes, self-care, of course, means having little “treat yo’ self” moments, drinking water, and putting on face masks. However, it also means taking some extra time to understand how you’re doing. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or sad, it’s okay to take a small break. We all need a breather at times. Talk to your friends, to your family, or to your student advisor in case you need a little help in dealing with your studies. It’ll make your 2020 way less stressful, and way more enjoyable.
3. Communicate with family more frequently
Personally, this is one of my main resolutions. The busier and more independent we become, the less we forget to keep in touch with our families. This is a good habit to build now, but also for the entire decade! If you can, send your relatives a text once a day to let them know you’re okay, and maybe give them a call once a week. Even 15 minutes will brighten their day, and it’ll make you feel better too!
4. Worry less
2019 was stressful, man. This year, one of your resolutions should be to worry less about what others think and do whatever makes you feel happy. Post whatever you want on social media without thinking about what others might say. Wear whatever outfit you want, or dedicate yourself to whatever hobby you like! If your studies are what worries you, then don’t stress. A failed exam is not the end of the world. You can always resit things, or talk to your study advisor. My general rule of thumb for 2020 is: if it hasn’t happened yet, then there’s no need to spend your days worrying about it.
5. Find ways to save more money
Earlier when I mentioned that adulthood was coming, this was what I meant. Yes, everyone is broke as a student, but your student years will soon come to an end. When that happens, you should have two things: a little bit of money saved up, and skills to be able to manage your money. I’m one of those people who spends their money the second they have it. So, if you’re like me, 2020 is your year to learn how to save more money. Your future you will thank you.
