Prof. dr. Rien van de Weijgaert and Alwin Noordman have the pleasure to invite you to the Masterwork Astronomy Symposium on Supernovae and black holes: from luminous stellar explosions to dark monsters of gravity

Join us for this symposium organized by Alwin Noordman, our honours student as part of his Masterwork under the supervision of prof. dr. Rien van de Weijgaert. This symposium is for anyone interested in hearing about the beauty of the universe we live in. We are excited to have Dr. Michelle Thaller (the Assistant Director of Science at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center) and other well-known speakers: Dr. Gibwa Musoke (a postdoctoral fellow at NOVA Virtual Institute of Accretion), and Prof. dr. Chris van den Broeck (UG professor at the Faculty of Science and Engineering), who will give presentations on a wide range of topics on supernova and black hole formation, black holes and their surroundings, the first image of a black hole, and gravitational waves due to colliding black holes.

Why should you attend

For most of our lives, we spend our time thinking about what happens here on Earth. Think of the medical sciences, economics, history, or linguistics. All focus on our lives on Earth. However, we are only a very, very small part of the universe. As we live our lives, an incredible number of powerful events is going on in the universe. To understand our place in the universe, we must learn about the universe and about the processes taking place within it. We are certain that you will see the beauty of the universe. For instance, when you look at the night sky, you can see so many beautiful stars. You might not be aware, however, how large these stars actually are, and how they meet their end. During this symposium, you will be able to learn about supernovae and black holes. It will be an amazing evening filled with interesting stories trying to show us one thing: our universe is truly beautiful.
