Course descriptions
|
You must upload course descriptions for all years of upper secondary education (and higher education, if applicable), specified per year.
Some curricula have already been assessed by the Admissions Board. If this is the case, you will not need to upload course descriptions. Click the tab 'Qualifications exempted from providing course descriptions' for more information about exemptions. |
Keep in mind that your application is evaluated only once, so it is important to follow the University of Groningen’s guidelines. Submitting incorrect or incomplete documents can impact your admission. If you are unsure about the requirements, feel free to reach out to us via our contact form .
Course descriptions help us determine if you have the right background knowledge for the Bachelor's programme you want to join. To make sure your background is fully understood, your course descriptions must be detailed and complete. You should include all courses you have finished or are currently taking. If applicable, provide course descriptions from both your upper secondary education* and higher education courses.
Check the table below to see which subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology)** need course descriptions, based on the Bachelor’s programme you are applying to. Use the relevant checklist for each subject, and attach your descriptions to it.
You need to combine the checklist with the course descriptions for each subject and submit them as one PDF per subject (e.g., one PDF for Mathematics courses, one for Physics, etc.). Make sure to add the course descriptions at the end of the checklist.
Course descriptions requirements
Course descriptions must be either in English or Dutch and match the courses and grades/credits listed on your transcripts. Do not forget to include courses to be completed. Official descriptions from your school or the Ministry of Education are preferred, but if they are not available in English or Dutch, you can provide unofficial translations.
If official descriptions are not available or do not give enough detail, you can write them yourself, but be sure to use the subject checklist as a guide.
Follow the checklist carefully—it explains what information you need to include.

FSE Criteria applying to course descriptions
If your qualification is not listed under 'Qualifications exempt from providing course descriptions', you will need to submit course descriptions with your application. These documents, typically provided by schools, explain the content and goals of your courses. The Admissions Board relies on them to assess if you have the right background for the BSc programme you are applying to.
Make sure your course descriptions are detailed, complete, and fully cover all the courses you have completed or are currently taking. Since your application is reviewed only once, it is crucial that you meet the University of Groningen’s requirements. Failing to provide complete or accurate descriptions can affect your admission chances. If your file is incomplete, it won’t be reviewed.
If you have any doubts regarding the requirements, do not hesitate to contact us or consult our Frequently Asked Questions section below.
Below, you will find more details on the requirements, checklists, and how to compile the course descriptions.
-
The PDF file you provide should include the checklist and course descriptions for all relevant courses from your upper secondary education and, if applicable, higher education.
-
You must use the relevant course description checklist(s) for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and/or Biology as an index for your course descriptions.
-
Submit the checklist and the course descriptions as one PDF file per subject (e.g. 1 PDF file for Mathematics courses, 1 PDF file for Physics courses, etc.). If you have official course descriptions, make sure to merge them with the checklist.
-
Course descriptions must be in either English or Dutch (unofficial translations are accepted.) If you translate your course descriptions, you do not need to provide the original version.
-
All courses listed in the checklist(s) and course descriptions must also appear on your transcript(s) of your (to be) completed courses.
-
Official course descriptions, like syllabi or curriculum details from your school or Ministry of Education, are preferred. If official descriptions are not available or detailed enough for the Admissions Board, you can compile them yourself.
-
Find the relevant checklist. First, fill out “1. General information” and “2. Course information”. Make sure the course names match exactly with those on your transcript.
-
On the last page of the checklist, under section “4. Your Course Descriptions”, fill in your course descriptions. If you have official course descriptions from an educational institution, combine them with the checklist. If the official course descriptions are not in English, translate them and only include the English version. If you compile your own course descriptions, add them to the end of the checklist. You can add as many pages as necessary.
-
Lastly, in section “3. Course Descriptions Information”, fill out the page or section number for each topic mentioned in your course descriptions. This helps the Admissions Board find the relevant information quickly. Only list page/section numbers for the topics you actually cover in your course descriptions.
Click here to find and download the relevant checklists.
What happens if the Admissions Board concludes that the curriculum does not match the Dutch VWO (pre-university education) curriculum?
If the Admissions Board concludes that your course descriptions do not prove your curriculum is equivalent to the Dutch VWO in the same subjects, you will need to get one of the accepted certificates to make up for this.
In which cases do I need to provide course descriptions?
Some curricula have already been assessed by the Admissions Board, so you may not need to submit course descriptions. Check the 'Qualifications exempted from providing course descriptions' tab to see if this applies to you.
If your secondary education qualifies for an exemption but you believe that you do not meet the subject-specific requirements, you can still submit course descriptions from relevant higher education courses (if applicable). This can include courses you have not completed yet. The Admissions Board will then decide if these courses can make up for gaps in your secondary education.
What should the course descriptions include?
Your course descriptions need to cover:
-
The aims and learning outcomes of the course;
-
A detailed explanation of each topic taught (a simple list of topics is not sufficient). Explain how deeply each topic was covered.
-
Examples of exercises or exams from the last two years, especially examples of tests taken. Include at least a couple from each course.
-
The skills you learned during the course.
Can you provide examples of course descriptions?
Unfortunately, we cannot give examples because every course description is different. Make sure to follow the instructions closely and include all the required details.
What if my school's course descriptions are not elaborate enough?
If the official course descriptions do not meet the requirements, you can add extra information yourself. In such a case, make sure to include both the official descriptions and your additions.
