Data Protection

Protecting research data is essential for upholding ethical standards, legal compliance, and public trust. By adhering to key principles, understanding regulatory requirements, and implementing best practices, researchers can effectively safeguard the data they collect and use. This not only enhances the integrity and reliability of research findings but also ensures the privacy and rights of research participants are respected.

Data protection measures

Before you start with the design of your research project, it is important to realize that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to data protection. In this section, you can find information on strategies to implement data protection by design, and additionally find several building blocks of measures that you can implement to protect your data in diverse research projects.

These measures include (but are not limited to):

  • Recording (contractual) agreements with research collaborators and other parties that handle the data
  • Data minimization and de-identification
  • Standard IT solutions to ensure safe handling of data
  • Taking extra security measures, such as encryption and access control
  • Conducting ethical reviews and obtaining approval from an ethical committee
