Hinke Haisma

Hinke Haisma is a Rosalind Franklin Fellow and an assistant professor at the Dept of Demography at the Faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of Groningen.

Her research focusses on how the use of resources affects inequalities in child health and nutrition. Having a background in human nutrition (agricultural sciences) and a PhD in medical sciences, and further training in social sciences, her work is interdisciplinary in its nature, and is driven by the link between biological and demographic sciences: she studies the biological and the social context of feeding behaviour in relation to health outcomes. In 2012 she obtained a VIDI grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research for her research on “Normative indicators of child growth and nutrition – one size fits all?” With this research she aims to contribute to the development of a new child growth monitoring tool, including dimensions of growth that go beyond the currently used medical parameters of physical growth, weight and length. She conducts research in the Netherlands (Eastern Groningen), Brazil, India, and Tanzania.
