Pauline Kleingeld

Pauline Kleingeld is Professor of Ethics and its History. She is internationally renowned for her work in the area of the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, contemporary Kantian ethics and philosophical cosmopolitanism and its history. She has published on themes including free will, the role of emotions, and cosmopolitanism in the past and present. Kleingeld has been able to build an important bridge between developments in the behavioural sciences and in ethics. She is currently researching the meaning of empirical psychological research for ethics and the question of how to justify moral duties. In addition, she focuses on research areas such as: practical rationality, political philosophy, including feminist theory.

Pauline Kleingeld previously held the position of Professor in Leiden and also worked at Washington University in St. Louis. She has led various NWO programmes (Morality beyond illusions: Re-assessing the philosophical implications of empirical studies of moral agency; Kant on morality and empirical knowledge of moral agency; The moral relevance of weakness of will: A dispositional account) and has published in leading journals, such as Philosophy & Public Affairs, The Philosophical Quarterly, European Journal of Philosophy, Kant-Studien and Journal of the History of Philosophy. With Cambridge University Press, she published her book Kant and Cosmopolitanism: The Philosophical Ideal of World Citizenship. In 2015, Kleingeld was appointed as a member of KNAW (the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences). In 2022 she was elected corresponding fellow of the British Academy and appointed member of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften.

In 2018, she received a large NWO subsidy for her research into universal moral norms. In 2020 Kleingeld was awarded the Spinoza Prize, one of the two highest scientific distinctions in the Netherlands. Professor Kleingeld will receive € 2.5 million to use in scientific research.
