Marie-José van Tol

Marie-José van Tol is Professor of Cognitive Neuropsychiatry at the UMCG and the UG. Her research combines perspectives from the fields of cognitive neuroscience, psychiatry, and clinical psychology to understand the role that the brain function plays in the development, recovery, and relapse of mood disorders. Van Tol studied Psychology at Utrecht University and obtained a PhD at Leiden University. After having been awarded a PhD, Van Tol joined the Cognitive Neuropsychiatry research group of Prof. André Aleman (UMCG), where she studied the mechanisms of neurostimulative treatment for apathy in people with schizophrenia.

From 2020 until 2024, Van Tol was chair of the Young Academy of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), a platform for researchers who obtained their PhD less than 10 years ago. In her role as chair, Van Tol aimed to create a more balanced and healthy academic climate in the Netherlands. In doing so, she strived to increase the societal recognition of young scientists. Within the Young Academy, she has also committed herself to the Internationalization track and to the cause of at-risk-scholars. In 2016, Van Tol was also one of the founders of the UG's Young Academy Groningen.
In May 2024, Van Tol has been appointed as the new director of the Research School of Behavioural and Cognitive Neurosciences (BCN). BCN is an interdisciplinary research school with its own PhD programme, bringing together five UG faculties.
