UG and GUF do not 'invest' in war industry
The University of Groningen (UG) and the Groningen University Fund (GUF) do not invest in businesses that are financing the destruction that is taking place in Gaza.
Reports on social media claim that the UG and GUF invest in businesses that are directly contributing to the destruction of Gaza. The UG is not allowed to spend its public funds on investment funds.
It is possible that the UG is being mistaken for the GUF. The GUF is an independent foundation that aims to promote study at the UG by, among other things, subsidizing study trips abroad and excursions for students and by students.
As from September 2022, the GUF invests in government bonds of various EU countries and funds with the label 'sustainable' in accordance with the independent Morningstar Sustainability Rating. They exclusively invest in sustainable funds that focus on environmental, social and good corporate governance, which means that they do not invest in businesses that, for example, are involved in activities in the tobacco or arms industries. The GUF communicates transparently about its activities and investments through its website and in the annual reports.
