Delegation visit from the University of Bremen
On Friday 16 June University of Bremen and UG renewed their MOU for cooperation. Prof.dr. Jutta Günther, Rector of University of Bremen together with Ms. Barbara Hasenmüller paid a visit to Groningen on invitation by the Board. For professor Günther it was her first visit to Groningen in her new role as Rector. Before she had academic contacts with the Faculty of Economics and Business.
The university of Bremen is relatively young (52 years). Two third of the student population is from the region; 15% of the 18.000 students are internationals. There are 12 faculties, and 260 professors. Interdisciplinary cooperation is in the genes of Uni-Bremen. In the U-Bremen Research Alliance (UBRA) the University of Bremen and twelve institutes of federal and state-financed non-university research cooperate. It includes research institutes of the four major German scientific organizations, i.e. Fraunhofer Society, Max Planck Society, Leibniz Association and Helmholtz Association, as well as the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence. The cooperation in the U Bremen Research Alliance extends over the four main scientific areas "Marine, Polar and Climate Research", "Material Sciences and Their Technologies", "Health Sciences" and "Minds, Media, Machines" and thus literally "From the deep sea to into space".
There is a perfect fit between UG’s strategy ‘Making Connections’ and Uni Bremen. For this first introductory visit, two items of cooperation with University of Bremen were highlighted: Wubbo Ockels School for Energy and Climate and Engineering and Technology Institute Groningen at Zernike Campus. Beyond this, there are existing collaborations with Bremen in other fields, for instance in coastal zone management
The University of Bremen delegates were welcomed by president Jouke de Vries, Prof. Lorenzo Squintany, Leo Dvorstsin, Prof. Bayu Jayawardhana, Victor Stoica, Mervin Bakker and Jodien Houwers.
A university delegation visit to Bremen in autumn, is one of the ideas that was posted. In the meantime, initiatives for smaller meetings and workshops to discuss projects and collaboration initiatives will be welcomed at ISR. Please contact j.d.houwers rug.nl
