UCG is moving
Big news for our Faculty building and for the student accommodation!
University College Groningen will be moving from the Hoendiepskade 23/24 location to the Bloemsingel 1. Our Faculty, therefore, will remain very near the city centre of Groningen - a 200 meters walk to the main square. We will move into a fully renovated building in a sustainable complex.
At the same time, our students will get a completely new residential building right next to the Faculty building. Making the commute to class a few minutes walk.
The construction of the residential tower with space for 270 students will begin this month, and the first residents are expected to move in by September 2023. The nineteen-storey student flat will be built on the corner of Vrydemalaan and Wouter van Doeverenplein, next to the UMCG (University Medical Centre Groningen). The rooms will be rented out exclusively to students at the University College Groningen who are enrolled in the Liberal Arts and Sciences bachelor programme.
Healthy Ageing Campus
Our Faculty building and the student accommodation are part of a bigger project called the Healthy Ageing Campus.
The Healthy Ageing Campus in Groningen will combine healthcare, education, research and entrepreneurship, with a focus on Food & Health, Medical Technology and Pharma. This will likely lead to spin-off companies, shared facilities and new knowledge regarding the ageing process and ways to enable individuals to reach their full health potential.
The Healthy Aging Campus will include a large teaching centre for the UMCG and a new building for the student culture centre USVA, among other facilities, according to the general agreement signed by the UG and UMCG in 2018.
The campus will be built around (0) a dynamic city square and will include several buildings: a (1) large teaching centre, primarily for Pharmacy and the Medical Science Faculty, (2) a fully renovated and extended historical building to accommodate University College Groningen and (3) USVA. There will also be room for (4 & 5) future UMCG development plans.
Coming together
The rooms of the student accommodation will have a private bathroom, so students will only have to share kitchen facilities. There will also be study spaces, a roof terrace, and catering facilities.
"The design of the tower offers all possibilities for learning, working together and living together - because learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom"'
Claimed our UCG dean Hanny Elzinga.
We are all looking forward to moving there and welcome new students in our UCG community.
