HEAVENN: H2 Energy Applications in Valley Environments for Northern Netherlands
In the EU project HEAVENN, I work on routing optimization and distribution network design on the transition towards a green hydrogen-based economy in the Northern Netherlands. HEAVENN, funded by the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking (now Clean Hydrogen Partnership) with support from the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation program, Hydrogen Europe, and Hydrogen Europe Research, is a pioneering initiative aimed at developing a fully functioning green hydrogen chain in the region. With subsidies and substantial public-private co-funding, this six-year program integrates production, distribution, storage, and local end-use of hydrogen across six key locations in the Northern Netherlands. The ultimate goal is to harness green hydrogen across the entire value chain, utilizing it as a storage medium for renewable energy sources and as an energy vector for decarbonization in various sectors, including industry, power, transport, and heat. HEAVENN serves as a blueprint for replicable business models and infrastructure integration, demonstrating the potential for significant economies of scale and improved sustainability across the regional energy landscape.
