prof. dr. R. (Ridwan) Maulana
I am Professor in Educational Sciences, chair Comparative Learning Environments at the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences, University of Groningen, The Netherlands.
I received my Bachelor degree in Biology Education from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (2003), Masters degree (2007) and PhD degree (2012) in Educational Sciences from the University of Groningen. My professorship chair specialises in comparative learning environments focusing on effective teaching and learning of students and teachers from international perspectives with special attention to diversity, equity and inclusion. Related topics under my research interest includes academic motivation, engagement, wellbeing, psychometry, cross-sectional and longitudinal designs, classical test theory, item response theory, cross-cultural research, and digital technology supporting teaching including machine learning and artificial intelligence.
I have been involved in various national research projects in the Netherlands including teacher preparation route (OIDS, 2012 - 2014) and national teacher induction (LONIE, 2014 - 2019). Since 2014, I have been leading an international project on effective teaching and differentiation (NRO, 2015 - 2021) including over 16 countries from Europe, America, Asia, Australia, and Africa. I have been co-leading several projects outside the Netherlands including, among other, Erasmus Mundus Design Measure with 4 European universities and 4 Korean universities (2023 - 2025), preservice teacher reflective dialogues (with Hong Kong, 2018 - 2020) and Research Joint-Cooperation on Effective Teaching (with Indonesia, 2015 - 2020). I have published my works in various peer-reviewed international journals and books as author and editor.
I have been serving as the Chair of Ethics Committee of the Teacher Education department (from 2017) and a member of Faculty Ethics Committee (from 2019). I have been an active member and SIG leader of Learning Environments of American Educational Research Association (AERA), a member of International Congress on School Effectiveness and Improvement (ICSEI), an OECD-TALIS Questionnaire Group Member (2021 - 2025) and a Europe Editor of Learning Environments Research journal.
I welcome future cooperation with national and international academic colleagues and potential PhD candidates on my research area. In particular, I am keen to discuss with Dutch and international academics and PhD candidates who are interested in generating empirical and theoretical insights regarding (inter)national perspectives on effective working and learning environments using quantitative and/or mixed-methods approaches (quantitative and qualitative).
