Current teaching
Most of my current teaching is in the linguistics stream of the BA English Language & Culture. This includes introductory courses on phonetics/phonology and sociolinguistics, and advanced undergraduate courses on language change and language variation. I also teach on pragmatics and English as a Lingua Franca. (That last course is part of the BA European Languages & Culture.)

Thesis supervision
I am available for thesis supervision at BA and MA levels in the areas of language variation and sociolinguistics, language contact, and language change. My expertise is mainly in English and Scandinavian languages, but I have also supervised theses in French.

Teaching and research
Especially in advanced undergraduate courses, I think it is important to integrate teaching and research. This usually means that students get to do semi-independent research to get acquainted with the material. A good example is the course English Language Variation, where we do a joint research project on language variation. In recent years we have looked at second-dialect (American) performance of Australian actors, language variation in a single speaker of Scottish English, and social variation in English in Aruba.

Past teaching
In the past, I have also taught English for Academic Purposes courses in Groningen, and I have done some sick leave cover for courses in Norwegian and Scandinavian linguistics. My first forays into teaching were in Edinburgh, where I taught seminars for English Language 1, and later a course in Historical and Diachronic Linguistics.
