Quirijn van den Hoogen works on various projects regarding cultural policy.

Current projects

Sara Strandvad,Manuel Reyes, and Quirijn van den Hoogen finished the manuscript for i Sociology About Art. An Introduction to How Sociologists study the Arts, in March 2024. The book will appear with Routledge.

Together with Djamila Boulil, Van den Hoogen is researching the sustainablity of peripheral creative ecosystems. The first results have been presented at the International Conference of Cultural Policy Research in 2022 (Antwerp) and 2024 (Poland).

In collaboration with Mette van Zoest, Renée Dil and Martina Denegri, Van den Hoogen is researching the impact of populism on culturla policies in Europe. to this end, they compare the content of party programmes of traditional and new political parties in Italy and the Netherlands.

Finished projects

The outcomes of the research on the changing values in theater and arts policies have been published in the report Tussen Tellen en Wegen (in Dutch), in the book Cultural Policy in the Polder and in the International Journal of Cultural Policy (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1080/10286632.2018.1433666).

With Johan Kolsteeg (Groningen University) Van den Hoogen researched the conceptualization and operationalization of the notion of regional identity in the northern Netherlands cultural policy. The first results have been published in Ruimte. De Noordelijke Regio en het Cultuurbeleid (in Dutch).

In October 2018 Amsterdam Univerity Press published Cultural Policy in the Polder, a volume on Dutch cultural policy and research of cultural policy  in the Netherlands. The volume commemorates the fact that the Dutch Cultural POlicy Act came into effect 25 years ago. Van den Hoogen is editor of this volume together with Edwin van Meerkerk (Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen) and was produced in co-operation with the Boekman Foundation.

Together with Louise Ejgod Hanssen, PhD. (Aarhus University) and Joshua Edelman, PhD. (Manchester Metropolitan University), Van den Hoogen wrote a book on autonomy in theatre systems. It was published at AUP in January 2017.

In De Waarde van Cultuur (co-authored with Pascal Gielen, Thijs Lijster, Sophie Elkhuizen and Hanka Otte) an overview of the evidence-base for cultural policy was published. In November 2012 a book on the evaluation of municipal cultural policy in the Netherlands was published by the Boekmanstichting. The book contains an updated version of his dissertation research and guidelines for municipalities to construct an evidence base for their cultural policy. The book is a co-operation with the Dutch Association of Municipalities in The Hague.  

For the audit commission of the city of Enschede, in co-operation with S. Elkhuizen, MA, Van den Hoogen assessed the evaluation of the city’s cultural policy in the summer of 2012. Their report contains recommendations that the city has included in the new cultural policy plan. A similar project was carried out for the audit commission of the municipality of Hoogeveen, together with Luchiena Lanjouw.

Van den Hoogen was chairman of the national public library convention in December 2010, organized by the national sector institute for public libraries. He also chaired a research seminar on the evaluation of the outcomes of public libraries (October 2012).

Van den Hoogen contributed to the evaluation of the Zina project Zina neemt de Wijk which took place in Groningen in 2010. The evaluation was written by prof.dr. J.J. van Maanen.
