O.O. (Olha) Cherednychenko, Prof

Prof. Dr. Olha O. Cherednychenko is a Full Professor at the University of Groningen where she has held a Chair in European Private Law and Comparative Law since 1 February 2012. Previously, she held academic positions in private law as a lecturer/researcher at the University of Utrecht (2002-2006) and as a senior lecturer at the VU University Amsterdam (2006-2012). She received her LLM (magna cum laude) and PhD from the University of Utrecht. She has been a visiting professor or fellow at the European University Institute (EUI) (Florence), the Oxford Institute of European and Comparative Law (IECL), the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), the London Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (IALS), and the University of Turin. She specialises in EU internal market law, market regulation, private law, contract law, financial law, fundamental rights, comparative law, and legal theory.
Olha Cherednychenko has published widely on the role of private law in constituting and regulating markets, the interplay between market regulation and private law in standard-setting and enforcement, and the impact of fundamental rights and freedoms on private law. Her books include Fundamental Rights, Contract Law and the Protection of the Weaker Party (Sellier European Law Publishers, 2007) and Financial Regulation and Civil Liability in European Law, ed. with M. Andenas (Edward Elgar, 2020). She has also authored or co-authored over 70 articles and book chapters, addressing a wide range of issues at the intersection between public and private law and between European and national law. Her work has appeared in leading law journals, including the Modern Law Review, Oxford Yearbook of European Law, and Journal of Consumer Policy. In recognition of her research, she has been elected to membership of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Legal Science (IALS), which operates under the auspices of UNESCO and the International Science Council (ISC).
Olha Cherednychenko regularly serves in key expert and advisory roles to national and EU institutions. Her professional work has included research projects commissioned by the European Parliament and the European Commission.
