Miente Pietersma is a PhD Candidate at the University of Groningen. He obtained a B.A. in History (2013-2016, Cum Laude) and a M.A.  in Classical, Medieval and Early Modern Studies (2016-2018, Cum Laude), both at the University of Groningen. He completed the Honours College Groningen B.A.-track, and part of his M.A.-studies took the form of an exchange semester to Ghent University.

Upon completing his M.A., he stayed as a Research Fellow at the Royal Dutch Institute in Rome in order to outline a future PhD-project. He subsequently worked as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Groningen (2019) and was awarded another Research Fellowship for developing his PhD-project at the University of Bern (2020). There he worked under the umbrella of the Martial Culture in Medieval Towns Research Project.

With a research project that focuses on the historical usage of bodies' ability to learn physical exercises for a variety of goals, including healthy living, Miente Pietersma has close ties with the field of Medical Humanities. During his M.A.-studies he worked as a Research Assistant in the project Histories of Healthy Ageing, and in 2019 he represented the Faculty of Arts as Coordinator and Core Lecturer in the team developing the new University Minor More Healthy Years, Current Challenges in Public Health. The Minor currently runs under the banner of the Aletta Jacobs School for Public Health, where Miente Pietersma still serves as Aletta Fellow. In addition, he is the current Coordinator for the Groningen Centre for Health and Humanities
