My PhD project focuses on the hypothesis that low subjective meaning in life and low self-control play a critical (causal) role in substance misuse and – often comorbid – internalizing psychopathology. As part of the New Science of Mental Disorders (NSMD) consortium, we use undirected and directed network models to investigate the putative (causal) pathways from meaning in life and self-control to substance misuse and internalizing symptoms. This will be followed up by (pre)clinical intervention research directly targeting the identified causal factor(s).
