Expertise
As an assistant professor, I work at the department of gastroenterology and hepatology. I am a clinical epidemiologist (MSc) with a broad background in nutrition. I am specialized in nutrition and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). I have set up various clinical trials in the field of nutrition and cancer. The focus here is mainly on maintaining a good nutritional status and muscle mass. I also do a lot of research in the field of nutrition and IBD. For people with IBD, I have designed an anti-inflammatory diet, the Groningen Anti-Inflammatory Diet (GrAID). This diet has been tested in a large RCT; the Vita-GrAID study. Results are published in scientific articles, but implementing the knowledge in patient care is also important. For example, I have developed a Nutrition and IBD knowledge tool for patients, so that they finally know what they can do to get fewer complaints from their diet and how nutrition can help them prevent inflammation. I also developed an IBD nutritional questionnaire (GINQ-FFQ), which not only generates scientific data, but can also gives people feedback on their nutritional intake. I also teach various master courses. With Eva Corpeleijn, I developed a new GSMS course nutrition statistics. This course helps master and PhD students who want to do nutritional research themselves. Since January 2024, I have been working on prevention at MoNuMind. MoNuMind is a knowledge center that focuses on prevention of 3 themes: nutrition, exercise and mental health, both for research and care in the UMCG. Employees who want to research these themes can use our expertise. In addition, we collaborate with prevention in healthcare (GLIM). We also try to strengthen the lines in the field of prevention to external.
