Can an AI-enabled system help us understand how cultural narratives are configured, and how do they prime social mobilization? A machine learning model for automatic detection of the regime(s) of conceptual metaphor
My project’s primary goal is to develop novel AI-enabled critical techniques to understand how cultural narratives are informed, orientated, and activated in our algorithmic societies and how they prime social mobilization. This project takes as the point of departure the current experimental instruments developed concerning the use of machine learning for natural language processing and, more specifically, those that have to do with the identification of conceptual metaphors.
My interrelated research questions are 1) In what way is possible to develop a discourse-level metaphor processing system to identify and interpret extended metaphor and enable metaphorical inference in real-world discourse? 2) How can a discourse-level metaphor processing system be expanded into a model about metaphorical production and cultural narratives configurations? 3) How can we process vast volumes of cultural and literary data and how these intervene as devices instrumental in the orientation not only of decision-making but the very engineering of our social fabrics and institutional discourse?
