Research on leadership and governance challenges

Marvin Hanisch is an Associate Professor in the Innovation management & Strategy Department at the University of Groningen. His research focuses on organizational leadership and governance issues in response to significant disruptions, including discontinuous technological changes, grand challenges, and crises. Employing both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, Dr. Hanisch investigates strategic alliances in the biopharmaceutical sector, cross-industry blockchain networks, digital platforms, and open-source software and social media communities.

Dr. Hanisch’s work has been featured in prestigious academic journals such as the Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Business Research, and R&D Management. He also contributes to practice-oriented publications such as California Management Review, LSE Business Review, and blog posts. Beyond academia, Dr. Hanisch collaborates with and provides consultancy to regional firms and multinational corporations, sharing his expertise to drive innovation and strategic development. He also builds bridges between academia and practice by serving as lead organizer for the Leadership and Governance in the Digital Age conference, which brought together international researchers and practitioners in Groningen in May 2024.

International visibility and network

Dr. Hanisch is an accomplished early career academic with extensive international experience. His work has been recognized with multiple awards, most recently the JTS Early Career Researcher Prize and the Distinguished Paper Award from the Strategic Management Division of the Academy of Management, both presented in 2023. In addition, he has held visiting research and teaching positions at renowned institutions such as Freie Universität Berlin, HKU Business School, Maynooth University, Purdue University, and the University of Colorado at Boulder. Prior to joining the University of Groningen, Dr. Hanisch worked as a research associate at the University of Passau, where he still maintains an affiliation.
