Dr. Mathieu Paapst works (part-time) as an assistant professor Law and IT at the University of Groningen. He is interested in the legal, ethical and sociological aspects of the information society. He graduated with a Master’s degree on Law and IT and he received his PhD on a multidisciplinary research project (Law, Public Administration, Innovation and Technology Management) regarding open source and open standards policy resistance in IT procurement. He has been project coordinator and/or researcher for several Dutch research projects (e.g. on standardization policy compliance for the Dutch ministry of Economic Affairs, on semantic interoperability standards for the ministry of Justice, and on e-Casemanagement, an international research for the judicial organizations). For many years he has been a board member of ISOC and the Open State Foundation. Nowadays he is a member of the supervisory board of the Pleio open source foundation and a member of the Ethical commission of the municipality of Groningen.  In addition to his work as a scientist, he has been co-developer and co-founder of two very successful (+800,000 users) open source plugins for WordPress (Complianz Privacy Suite; and Complianz Terms and Conditions) and co-founder of Cookiedatabase.org. He also co-founded and managed a medium-sized consultancy firm in the field of IT and law. He sold his shares in these companies.
