dr. L. (Lotte) van Poppel
Lotte van Poppel is an Assistant Professor in Speech Communication and Discourse Analysis, teaching in the BA and MA Communication and Information Studies and Dutch Language and Literature.
Previously, she was a postdoc researcher in the NWO-funded project Resistance to metaphor at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) led by prof. Gerard Steen. For several years, she was also a lecturer in the Dutch Department of the UvA and in the Dutch Department of Leiden University. She has taught BA and MA classes in argumentation theory, pragmatics, persuasion research, and stylistics.
In her research, Lotte investigates the use of argumentation and other persuasive strategies in several argumentative settings, such as communication aimed at behavioural change. She particularly focuses on how criticism or resistance to persuasion may arise and how language users may try to prevent or address this criticism. In recent research, she investigates how metaphors can be used in argumentation and in what ways metaphors may evoke resistance.
Lotte is also one of the founders of the Argumentatieplatform, a platform for Dutch researchers focusing on argumentation, debate and persuasion.
