Luuk de Boer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Legal Methods at the University of Groningen. Trained as an interdisciplinary lawyer, his research and teaching interests lie primarily at the intersection of legal theory and legal practice, with a current emphasis on sovereign citizens.

Dr. de Boer studied Law and History at Utrecht University and obtained a PhD in Classics and the Interdisciplinary Humanities in 2021 from Princeton University, where he was also a postdoctoral associate. Dr. de Boer joins the faculty at the University of Groningen after a two-year stint in Turkey at Bilkent University. For his research, Luuk de Boer has also held year-long visiting fellowships at the École Normale Supérieure de Paris and at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa.

Work implementing his research agenda has appeared in various journals and has recently gravitated towards the so-called sovereign citizens; combining legal theoretical and empirical methods, his work sheds new light on an unknown, but fascinating group. Other work concentrates on legal insignia of power, on the use legal concepts in political theory (contract, will, adoption), and particularly on the problem of legal or institutional violence.
