Summary
Jan de Vries studied Business Administration (MSc, PhD) at the University of Groningen. After his study Jan de Vries worked in the field of Operations management and Business Logistics, both as a consultant as well as a line-manager. Since 1984 he is a staff member at the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Groningen. In this Faculty he formerly held the position of director of the Production and Service management programme (1996-2002). He furthermore occupied several Managerial positions, both within as well as outside the Faculty, most of them in the field of Operations Management and Business Logistics.
Although a strong interest in all parts of the topics within Operations Management, the research expertise of Jan de Vries strongly relates to organizational topics surrounding planning and control systems and co-coordination issues. During the last fifteen years Jan de Vries conducted studies in the area of Supply Chain Networks, Operations Strategy, the Organizational setting of planning and control structures and the application of Operations Management concepts within a Service context (especially Healthcare). During the period 2002-2003 Jan de Vries spent his sabbatical leave in the United Kingdom where he was granted the title and status of Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Warwick and at Aston University, Birmingham, UK. During both periods Jan de Vries concentrated on research in the area of supply networks.
From 2004-2017 Jan de Vries held the position of director of the BSc Business Administration programme. From 2017-2021 Jan de Vries also chaired the Board of Examiners of the Faculty of Economics and Business.

During the last ten years Jan de Vries participated in a large number of committees both in and outside the Faculty of Management and Organization. Most of these committees were in the area of Administration, Management and Education (for example: Committee Program Evaluation, Committee Revision Curriculum, Advisory Committee Management Game, several Chair Selection Committees).
Personal interests
Although his work is probably his greatest hobby, Jan de Vries is also a fanatic sailor. In the past he developed several educational programmes for sailing-instructors. As a chief-instructor, he worked for several years at one of the largest sailing-institutes in the Netherlands. Furthermore, he was a certified sailing-examinator for more than ten years.
