prof. dr. J.M. (Thijs) van der Hulst
Main interests: Using observations of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) in and around galaxies to study the main processes for gas accretion and gas removal, which are essential for their evolution.
Current main projects are:
(i) further development of SoFiA-2, a powerful software package to detect HI sources in large data volume using clever automated methods of source detection using the full 3-dimensional information of the data (https://gitlab.com/SoFiA-Admin/SoFiA-2)
(ii) further development of using Virtual Reality to view 3-dimensional data such as HI data cubes to explore the source structure and to examine the quality of the data and the source finding with SoFiA-2. The software is developed in Cape Town at IDIA (https://idia.ac.za/visualization-laboratory/ and https://idavie.readthedocs.io/en/latest/)
