dr. J.H.M. (Hans) Peeters
Hans Peeters (1963) is Associate Professor at the Groningen Institute of Archaeology, where he teaches the archaeology of hunter-gatherers, geoarchaeology, material culture studies, as well as societal aspects of archaeology. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Amsterdam (2007) for his study on Mesolithic-Neolithic land-use dynamics and innovative approach to heritage management issues in the Dutch Flevoland polders. Prior to his appointment at the University of Groningen, he first worked as a specialist in lithic technology at the National Heritage Agency (Amersfoort). As of 1995, Peeters directed several projects and research teams in his function as a project leader/senior archaeologists at the National Heritage Agency. In the context of the excavations at Almere-Hoge Vaart and Urk-E4 (Mesolithic-Neolithic), as well as in the Zuidelijk Flevoland Project (landscape archaeology), he has directed research teams consisting of 4 to 20 specialists from various disciplines (archaeology, earth sciences, biological sciences). Furthermore he co-ordinated an international working group that focused at the development of the North Sea Prehistory Research and Management Framework (NSPRMF), published in 2009 and updated in 2019. He was the principal applicant of the project Unlocking North Holland's Late Neolithic Treasure Chest: Single Grave Culture behavioural variability in a tidal environment. He is currently involved in the NWO-funded project EDAN (the Emergence of Domesticated Animals in the Netherlands), and is PI of the NWO funded project Resurfacing Doggerland.
