prof. dr. G.H. (Gerard) Koppelman
Gerard Koppelman (1970) studied Medicine at the University of Groningen. He received his master’s degree in 1994 and in 1996 he graduated - cum laude - as a medical doctor. From 1996 until 1997 Gerard Koppelman was medical teacher at the University of Medical Sciences in Groningen, subsequently he worked as a PhD research fellow at the Department of Pulmonology of UMCG en the Center for the genetics of asthma and complex diseases of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore MD, (USA).
In 2001 Gerard Koppelman obtained a PhD degree – cum laude - on the Faculty of Medical Sciences on the subject of genetics of asthma and atopy.
From then he worked as a medical doctor in training for Pediatrics in the UMCG and the Martini Hospital in Groningen (NL). From 2005 he was fellow Pediatric Pulmonology under supervision of prof. E.J. Duiverman, until he became a pediatric pulmonologist in 2008. In the meantime – in 2006 - Gerard Koppelman began a tenure track from Assistant professor of Pediatrics, he was Visiting Associate Professor of Medicine at the Channing Laboratory, Brigham and Women’s Hospital of the Harvard Medical School in Boston (USA) in 2011-2012 and was appointed Department Head, Pediatric Pulmonology and Pediatric Allergology of the UMCG in Groningen (NL) in 2013. In 2015 Gerard Koppelman became a Full Professor of Pediatric Pulmonology.
Currently, Koppelman is (co-) supervising 9 PhD students. He is head of Department of Pediatric Pulmonology and Pediatric Allergy, and works as a pediatric pulmonologist in the University Medical Center Groningen
