Honorary Professor "Mortality and Longevity" (Faculty of Spatial Sciences)

Fanny Janssen is senior researcher at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) in The Hague and Honorary Professor in "Mortality and Longevity" at the Department of Demography, Faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of Groningen, the Netherlands.

She holds a Bachelor in Human Geography (Groningen), a Master in Demography (Groningen) and in Epidemiology (Rotterdam) and a PhD in Medical Demography (Rotterdam) (2005). After her PhD, she continued her academic career at the University of Groningen. In 2020 she opted for a full research position at NIDI but remained affiliated with Groningen as Honorary Professor.

Fanny conducts research on mortality and health at the population level in the Netherlands and Europe. Her research focusses on mortality differences between men and women, between countries/regions, over time and across generations. She also conducts research on the role of health-related lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol, obesity) in shaping mortality differences and mortality trends, with the final aim to improve mortality forecasting. She was awarded a VIDI grant in 2014, and a VICI grant in 2020, both by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). In her VICI research project she will focus on socio-economic inequalities in mortality, and how they will, realistically, further develop into the future. She is winner of the European Demography award 2018.
