F. (Frank) Abbas
Frank Abbas, DDS, PhD, FDS RCSEd
Prof. Frank Abbas obtained his DDS degree from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands in 1979.
He did his specialty training in periodontolgy at the University of Amsterdam (now called Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam-ACTA) including a PhD thesis on Susceptibility to Periodontal Diseases in 1986.
In 1989 he was appointed as specialist in periodontology by the Dutch Society for Periodontology. Prof. Abbas was active in many professional committees including the Faculty Board and the board of the Dutch Society for Periodontology.
He is founding member of the Clinic for Periodontology in Amsterdam and maintained practice as periodontist in a multydiciplinary approach of oral rehabilitation until 2019. At the Department of Periodontology of ACTA he acted as head of the clinic and coordinator of the MSc Programme in Periodontology.
His research focus is on susceptibility to periodontal diseases, in particular the relationship oral microbiology and clinical periodontology and also on regenerative and surgical techniques in periodontal plastic surgery. Furthermore he is involved in research on the periodontal-general health connection.
In 2003 he was appointed as professor in periodontology at the Center for Dentistry and Oral Hygiene of the University Medical Center of Groningen (UMCG), University of Groningen. From 2007 – 2014 he acted as chairman of the Center for Dentistry and Oral Hygiene. From 2019 - 2021 he was Dean of the Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) . In 2022 he became Honorary Member of the Dutch Society for Periodontology
