Expertise

Dr. E Falade is an Assistant Professor of Popular Music, Sound and Media Cultures. Dr Falade is a Black queer, feminist DJ and ethnomusicologist whose research sits at the nexus between race, gender, sexuality and popular music studies. Dr Falade’s research has focused on disrupting the erasure of the experiences of marginalized communities, particularly Black Queer women artists, within the realm of popular music studies. In their current research Dr. Falade is focused on uprooting how Black queer women artists are forming what can be termed a digital subaltern ‘counter public’. This counter public serves as a response to the exclusionary politics of dominant public spheres, particularly within Black popular music visual culture. This research aims to delve into this phenomenon, exploring the embodiment of marginalized voices within the digital realm and exploring how these women are using social media platforms as sites of oppositional discourse.
