1985-1990: Study Materials Science at Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands . Master of Science degree (cum laude) with final research project in the section ‘Physical Chemistry of the Solid State ’ under supervision of prof. dr. ir. E.J. Mittemeijer. For this research project I was granted the price of the Delft University Fund (price can be awarded yearly to best Master research project per faculty).
1991-1994: Ph.D. student (Foundation for Fundamental Research of Matter, FOM) in the section ‘Physical Chemistry of the Solid State ’ under supervision of prof. dr. ir. E.J. Mittemeijer, Laboratory for Materials Science, Delft University of Technology. Title of Ph.D. thesis: “Iron-Nitrogen Phases: Thermodynamics, Long-Range Order and Oxidation Behaviour”. I was granted the “Re Metallica” Brandsma price (Agricola medal) of the ‘Dutch Society of Materials Knowledge’ (‘Bond voor Materialenkennis’) for an outstanding Ph.D. thesis in the field of Materials Science in The Netherlands.
1995-2006: Assistant professor in the research group Materials Science, Dept. Applied Physics, University of Groningen , The Netherlands, headed by prof. dr J.Th.M. De Hosson.
Oct. 2006- July 2009: Associate professor in the research group Materials Science, Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, University of Groningen , The Netherlands.
Jan. 2009- Sept. 2012: Director of the education Industrial Engineering and Management (‘Technische Bedrijfskunde’) with a total of over 500 students in the Bachelor and Master programs. (0.5 fte).
July 2009 - now: Associate/Adjunct/Full professor, head of the research group “Nanostructured Materials and Interfaces” also comprising an adjunct professor (Prof. George Palasantzas), a research technician (ing. Gert ten Brink) and typically about 8 PhD students.
Published over 200 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and conference proceedings.
