I am professor of health law in a global context at the Faculty of Law. My research, which is embedded in the Groningen Centre for Health Law, is at the intersection of health law, international law and human rights. I have a particular interest in the evolving field of public health law, where international standards play a pivotal role. My work supports research on the regulation of behavioral risk factors, such as smoking, unhealthy diets, alcohol consumption, and drug use. From 2023-2024, I served as the chair of the Dutch state committee on MDMA "beyond ecstasy". I am founder and co-editor of the new Journal of Global Health law (2024). In 2022, I was awarded the Legal Specialist Award by the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL). Notable publications include Health and Human Rights (2022, 2e ed), Human Rights and Tobacco Control (open access), and Research Handbook on Global Health Law (2018). In September 2024, the Groningen Centre of Health Law and STeP launched a new master’s track in Health and Technology Law .
