Bio

Dr. Aikaterini [Katerina] Tsampi is Assistant Professor (UD1) of Public International Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen and teaches at the top rated programme Public International Law. Her research spans a wide array of topics within international and European human rights law, boasting over 40 publications in these fields. Dr. Tsampi has published extensively on the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) especially on rule of law, health and island issues. Her ECtHR research has been selected and cited in the Knowledge Sharing platform of the ECtHR (ECHR-KS) under numerous entries. Her monograph, published by Pedone-Paris, constitutes an original contribution to the rule of law literature by addressing the separation of power in the case law of the ECtHR. The same goes for her consequent work on misuse of power and Article 18 of the European Convention on Human Rights published inter alia in the Netherlands Quarterly of Human Rights. Dr. Tsampi’s innovative research extends to other underexplored areas too, such as tobacco control within European human rights law – with her findings published, inter alia, in the European Convention on Human Rights Law Review – and islandness - with her findings published, inter alia, in the Netherlands Journal of International Law. Dr. Tsampi has pioneered the study of "islandness" in international human rights law, introducing this novel concept in scholarly literature, which examines the intersection of human rights and Island Studies. Keen on interdisciplinary approaches, Dr. Tsampi has contributed to top journals across various fields, including the Island Studies Journal, the European Journal of Pediatrics, and the European Journal of Health Law, further highlighting her versatile research interests and expertise in human rights law.

Dr. Tsampi is a founding member of the Editorial Board for Human Rights Here, the blog of the Netherlands Network of Human Rights Research, and also serves on the Editorial Board of the bilingual (French/English) journal Europe des Libertés/Europe of Liberties. Additionally, she has been invited to review for several journals (among many others, Leiden Journal of International Law; Journal for European Environmental & Planning Law; European Convention on Human Rights Law Review) as well as for leading publishers such as Oxford University Press. She has participated in EU, Dutch and Polish funded projects (e.g. Erasmus+; FRA (European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights); Dutch Heart Foundation/the Lung Foundation Netherlands/the Dutch Cancer Society/the Dutch Diabetes Research Foundation/the Netherlands Thrombosis Foundation; NAWA (Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange)). Dr. Tsampi has been invited as judge and coached teams in international human rights law moot court competitions both in English and French (Helga Petersen Moot Court Competition; Concours Réne Cassin). She is Research Fellow of the Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health and Athens PIL. She is member of the Internationalisation Committee and the LLM GCL/IHRL/PIL Programme Committee of the UG Faculty of Law. In 2024 she became member of the Steering Committee of the Netherlands Network for Human Rights Research.

Prior to joining academia, Dr. Tsampi was Legal Officer at the Greek National Commission for Human Rights (GNCHR), the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) of Greece, publishing thus, various reports and studies pertaining to human rights law and collaborating with international organizations and national human rights stakeholders. In her capacity as an independent researcher, she has been involved in different human rights projects and activities (e.g. UN Human Rights Committee). She has been qualified as a trainer by the CoE HELP program and she is a qualified lawyer at the Rhodes Bar Association.

Dr. Tsampi was awarded her PhD in Human Rights from the University of Strasbourg - Institut de Recherches Carré de Malberg, France (PhD thesis under the supervision of Prof. P. Wachsmann) in 2017. She has undertaken LLM studies in Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at the University of Paris II/Panthéon-Assas, France (LLM thesis under the supervision of Prof. J.F. Flauss) and in Specialised Public Law at the University of Bordeaux IV, France and University of Athens, Greece (LLM thesis under the supervision of Prof. O. Dubos and Prof. D. Szymczak). She holds an LLB from the Faculty of Law of the University of Athens. A part of her undergraduate studies was undertaken in the University of Strasbourg, France (Notions Fondamentales de Droit International, Européen et Comparé). During her studies, she had received different scholarships (i.e. Ile-de-France, Paris, “Bourse d’excellence”, C. Fanourakis Foundation (CFF), Greece).

She speaks Greek (native speaker), English, French, Italian and A2 level Dutch.
