Medes Malaihollo is a PhD Candidate at the Department of Transboundary Legal Studies (Faculty of Law, University of Groningen). The working title of his research project is 'Synergies between Due Diligence and Self-Determination of Indigenous Peoples in International Law'.

Before starting with his PhD research, he worked as a junior lecturer in International Law at the University of Groningen. He taught multiple courses in the LLB curriculum, such as ‘Introduction to International and European Law’, ‘Public International Law’, 'Student Moot Court' and 'Honours College Moot Court'. He also supervised students for their LLB theses and LLM theses, mostly about the right to self-determination of peoples in international law, at the University of Groningen.

Between 2020-2023, he was the Publishing Director of the Groningen Journal of International Law.

He obtained two LLM degrees in Legal Research (graduated cum laude) and Public International Law (graduated cum laude) from the University of Groningen. Both of his LLM theses already addressed various aspects of his current PhD project, setting the foundation for this research. Before this, he studied Dutch law with a specialisation in International and European Law at the University of Groningen. In 2017, he studied abroad at the Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta.

His work has been published in the Netherlands International Law Review and the Leiden Journal of International Law.
